LANDSLIDE IN LA PAZ

On February 26th 2011 the city of La Paz has witnessed the biggest disaster of its history: following some heavy rains the earth has crumbled in eight different neighbourhoods and more than six thousand people have been left without a home. In the interested areas, which are all located in the southern part of the city, schools have been closed and streets have been blocked by the authorities. More than a thousand houses have been damaged, and the affected areas of La Paz could remain with no drinkable water for several months.

In Kupini II neighbourhood some people sit in the middle of the muddy streets with what remains of their personal belongings, waiting for someone to tell them where to go or helplessly watching the flood go by. Many others have formed a queue and are waiting for the police to open the access point to the collapsed bridge in order to climb the hill up to where their homes were, and take away everything they can before the situation gets worse (whichis very likely to happen, as it is the middle of the rainy season). In the meanwhile the fire brigade, together with the army and some volunteers, try moving some stones in order to secure the bridge and the immediately surrounding areas.
